Day 43- Taking Control

Friday, February 12, 2010
My green change of today is to explore greener birth control options. The problem with my current method, the pill, is not only the amount of packaging used to contain it, but the disturbing harm it has on aquatic wildlife. The synthetic hormones are excreted through urine end up in rivers and streams. To read more about what happens to the fish in the water contaminated by hormones, click here.

While I would never condone unprotected sex, I do think it is important to understand the impact of our methods of birth control.

So, today I bid the pill adieu and attempt to find something with less of an impact. The method I am considering is charting. I have heard nothing but fabulous things about the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which apparently makes sense of charting, so I have ordered it from my local library.

I highly recommend looking into an IUD. It used very little hormones (which hurts you too, not just the fish). You put it in and it's good for 5-7 years and you will have MUCH less if any of a period each month. That will save you pads too! I had one for just over 4 years and loved it!

Thanks, Callista. This is something I have been seriously considering. A copper IUD seems to be low impact and highly effective. The only thing holding me back though is conflicting reports that I can't use a DivaCup with an IUD- so I'm kind of torn!

Is a DivaCup for your period? I started using flannel pads and liners before I got pregnant. Since you're already washing diapers it wouldn't be any more work. I find them so comfy too. Something to consider...

Yes it is. www.divacup.com if you want to read more about it! It's not as bad to use as it might sound! I'm thinking I might pick up some flannel liners though. I just started using the DivaCup last month and haven't quite mastered it. Thanks for the suggestion!
